A Few Facts About Working From Home

In this economic climate people are having to completely change the way they think about how to earn an income. Long gone are the days when you could leave school aged 16 and walk into a secure job for life. Nowadays even people who have given years of loyal service to employers once considered “a safe bet” are finding themselves being issued with redundancy notices, and well qualified people of all ages are being forced into competing with hundreds of others for jobs which are a far cry from what they trained to do.

We hear a great deal about what tough times we are living in don’t we? But the flip side of this coin is that with the rise of the internet, we are also living in times of great opportunity. Many of these opportunities are ideally suited to people who are looking to work from the comfort of their own home.

Advantages of working from home

Working from home gives you flexibility, freedom, earning potential and most importantly, it puts you in control. If you have been used to working in a supervised environment, then it’s true to say that working from home throws you into a totally different world with different distractions. However all the qualities you need to succeed working for an employer apply just the same. If you are determined and prepared to work hard building up your home based business there is absolutely no reason why you cannot earn a respectable amount of money, whilst enjoying all the benefits.

Disadvantages of working from home

The first disadvantage is that you cannot guarantee how much money you will earn working from home. This is especially true if you are planning on starting your own home based business, as opposed to finding some kind of home based job, where you are predominantly working for someone else. It has to be said, however that although initially your earnings may be a little unpredictable when you start running a home based business, the earning potential is considerably higher in the long term.

If you have been a person who enjoyed the social aspect of “going out to work” then it may take you some time to adjust to working from home. Although it can be very rewarding, working from home can be a solitary business. You need to be able to motivate yourself and be prepared to spend a chunk of your time alone if you are to make a success of working from home.

Change your mindset

Although you are not physically going out of the house to work, if you want to make a success of working from home, you will still need to protect the time you plan to spend “at work” in your home office. This may involve switching off your phone or setting aside a dedicated area of your house which will become your work area. It may be tempting to think about getting stuck into that basket full of washing or ironing in the next room, or having an extra cup of coffee whilst flicking the TV channels, but a good rule of thumb is if you could not do a particular activity whilst working away from the home in an employer’s office, then you should not attempt to do it at home whilst you are working also.
